Wild rice is extremely healthy and incredibly tasty! It is high in protein and fiber, low in fat and gluten free. It is a fabulous source of minerals such as potassium, phosphorus and magnesium, and vitamins such as riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, Vitamin A and choline, which is great for improving memory and cognition, protecting heart health and boosting metabolism.
It is native to Northwestern Ontario, where I was born and raised, and a staple food for many indigenous communities, but throughout most of North America wild rice is enjoyed as a delicacy.
Why is it a delicacy? This wild rice is grown without the use of fertilizers and pesticides. It is grown on the non-depleted soil at the bottom of Trout Lake. A pristine lake located within the boreal forests in Northwestern Ontario. This Naturally Grown Canadian Wild Rice is harvested by the Flying Wild Rice Company located in my hometown, Red Lake Ontario.
I have been enjoying wild rice for over a decade, and whenever I make this wild dish side dish at home or for potluck gatherings, it is always a hit! I would often get asked where to purchase wild rice, and in the past, I didn't have much of an answer because I would get it from my hometown whenever I visited Red Lake, or my parents would bring some when they came to visit. Today, I can proudly say that I sell it!
Wild rice that is sold in grocery stores is often sold in rice mixes that include other varieties of rice and grains. There is a good chance that it is the farmed variety grown in artificial ponds in California and marketed as "wild rice."
It is not common to find 100% Canadian grown wild rice in supermarkets and natural food stores. Hence, my desire to sell such a great product that is close to my heart, as well as share my passion for nutrition and great home cooking!
See below for ways you can purchase some of this great tasting nutritious wild rice.
This wild rice is sold in 1 lb. and 2 lb. bags for your convenience.
