The body responds to stress, anxiety and fear by becoming hypervigilant. When stress, anxiety and fear is prolonged, the body becomes extremely tense and oversensitive to its surroundings which leads to discomfort and pain. Restorative Movement Education addresses the body's need to feel safe and brings it into a state of balance and harmony using the sensory motor feedback loop of the somatic nervous system to release, lengthen and completely relax tight muscles. Learning how to relax tight muscles allows the mind to feel safe, relaxed and calm. When the body is relaxed the mind is relaxed and vice versa.
Sleep is not only effective for the physical body, but it also helps maintain cognitive skills, such as improving your memory, attention span, and the ability to regulate emotions. Doing restorative movements before bed for as little as 15 minutes per day can improve sleep by teaching your brain to release and relax muscle tension that has accumulated throughout the day. To relax is to shift into the Parasympathetic Nervous System mode, that encourages rest, digest, and repair, which in turn results in an improvement in the duration and quality of sleep.
By turning your attention inward and mindfully sensing and feeling movement, you gain a greater sense of mastery to recognize your strength and optimal potential for positive change. Somatic movement allows you to be brought back into a safe, comfortable and pleasant experience of yourself, because you learn who you are and what you are capable of through movement. Restorative movement education is a liberating practice that leads you to be comfortable in your own skin and fully engaging in life.
